The first thing to do is to learn the importance of self-care. If you don’t take care of yourself mentally and physically, then your work as a lawyer is going to suffer. You need to have a clear mind and enough stamina to get through your workday. Sometimes it is best to recognize your limitations so that you don’t take yourself out for more days by getting sick or causing yourself to become depressed.
Lawyers who practice good self-care are able to find a nice balance between hard work and time off. It’s fine to make your job a priority in your life but you should see taking care of yourself as an extension of that. Self-care is a part of the job in many ways because you need to be at your best. Contribute to this by eating a healthy diet, getting enough sleep at night, and exercising regularly.
Humility is something that many lawyers need to learn about. Sometimes people overestimate themselves and they wind up taking on more work than they can handle. Lawyers might be too proud to admit that they can’t handle something on their own so they keep pushing forward even to the detriment of their own health. Instead of being afraid to ask for help, you should be humble enough to know your limitations. Be ready to work with others and learn to rely on your team.
